Since school, I've been...
Within days after graduating I joined the US Army. My job category was Bandsman (Musician) During my three years I was stationed in Washington DC, , Augusta GA, and Straubing Germany .
After returning to civilian life I began attending college and working in the airline industry.. I started as a Baggage Handler and then an Operations Agent for Western Airlines in San Francisco.
I started taking flying lessons in hopes of becoming an airline pilot. Although I earned a private and commercial license, it was not meant to be. I later earned a BS in Management from California Coast University which better served me in my career.
In 1968 I transferred to Los Angeles with Western Airlines and then joined Pan Am there as a Crew Scheduler as part of their new 747 Crew Base. I then learned that an acquaintance whom I had known in San Francisco was going through Western Airlines Flight Attendant training in Los Angeles. We got together, began dating and a year later we got married. We were married for seven years.
We decided that we would wait for at least five years before having children. By this time I was moving up in my career and she was still flying. I accepted a good management position with Pan Am at Washington Dulles airport. We moved to Northern Virginia which was the first of many relocations. My wife had quit flying after about five years due to a back injury suffered on the job. After about 18 months in Washington I accepted a promotion and we moved to Miami. Then to Houston. It was there we separated and then divorced. We never did have children. She went back to Washington and remarried and I stayed in Houston for about six years. After Houston I was transferred back to Miami for a couple of years then the department was moved to New York JFK. It was in New York in the early 80s that Pan Am reorganized and as a result I lost my job after more than 17 years. I was unemployed for six months until I went to work as a Rental Agent for Alamo Rent A Car in Los Angeles in 1985 and began the process over again. I held a few management positions with Alamo in Los Angeles then as part of their expansion, they opened a location in Cleveland in 1987 and I accepted the position as General Manager of that location. I held that position for twelve years until once again due to reorganization I was let go. This time I was unemployed for a year and a half and once again had to start all over again. I decided to go back into aviation and moved to Dallas in 2000 to join Legend Airlines as a Crew Scheduler. This was a startup company which hadnt even begun operations. Unfortunately, the company only lasted a few months when it ran out of cash and had to declare bankruptcy.. As I hadnt yet sold my house in Cleveland, I moved back and became a Dispatcher for a company called Flight Options which operates corporate jets. They too were also a new company and although I stayed there for over seven years, the culture and the difference in philosophy made it a bad fit between management and me. I decided to leave in December 2007 and am now retired.
I am single and still live in the Cleveland area. I have property that provides rental income and with an IRA and social security I am able to easily live within a budget. I no longer have any ties to this area and once I am able to sell my residence which is currently “under water” I will move to somewhere the Winters are less brutal. I would love to hear from anyone from GWHS who may remember me. I was involved in the band and orchestra. By the way, I still play drums and am a member of the Lakeland Civic Band at Lakeland College in Kirtland, Ohio.
